Bruce Steer Pool, Bermagui
NSW South Coast Splash Parks, Shallow Beaches, Lakes and Streams

The Bruce Steer Pool is a gently sloping, sheltered beach next to the breakwater of the Bermagui harbour. It is protected on one side by the headland and on the other by the stone breakwater, so that even when it is windy in town, this little spot can be relatively calm. The pool is tidal, but the flat slope into the water is suitable for kids at both high and low tide. There is a 25 metre long beach with several metres of sand above the water line for making sandcastles and running around on. There are a handful of small trees that provide some shade, or bring a beach shelter if you are planning to stay a while. Hazards at this site include the sharp rocks at the eastern end of the beach, so steer your kids away from them, particularly at low tide.
There is a shark and stingray net at the end of the pool. The facilities here include a basic toilet block and shower (up the steps), and two picnic tables, but on my last visit a master plan for the site was being mooted.

The pool itself is around 140 metres long, so older kids and adults can also do laps for some exercise as well. The pool is popular with local swimmers when the nearby Bermagui Blue Pool is howling a gale. It can also be an option if Horseshoe Bay has stingers. You can read all about Bruce and the role he played in the development of the Bermagui harbour at an information board on site.
